Eat With Will: Grubbin In Houston, Texas
/When we travel we take all of our personal belongings: smell goods (Cologne/Perfumes), our favorite threads (Clothing), but what about our appetites? Yes! Those come along on the trip with us. This past weekend I buried my face into delicious enchiladas, homemade biscuits, tacos and many other cuisines and then I realized how much food I eat when I come back home to Texas.
Houston is a place that has a lot to offer, especially in their food scene. You can find great Mexican food, restaurants that support farm to table movement and French Bakeries that'll make you feel like you're in Paris. The city is a host to over 11,000+ restaurants and more people eat out here than any other city in the U.S.
Trying to to figure out what to eat in a city can be challenging. I'm always on Yelp and Scoutmob filtering searches, looking at reviews and which restaurant are offering a deals. You know I'm a fan of deals. Before, I venture to a new city the first thing on my mind is..... What's the food like?
I'm always searching for the best grubs in the city and Houston treated me well!
El Tiempo Cantina
I stumbled across El Tiempo Cantina from a friend who was assisting us with Art, Beats and Lyrics while i was in Houston. When you visit El Tiempo you feel the true Tex/Mex vibes as you enter the restaurant. The place is decorated beautifully and the food didn't disappoint. Don't be afraid of the menu prices on the first pages, flip to the back for more reasonable dishes that are priced well. The Green Chile Enchiladas had my taste buds doing the Percolator.
Dish Society
Dish Society was a definite foodie win! The staff was friendly and I had a great conversation with Jeff the bartender. We started a conversation on why more restaurants should practice the farm-to-table movement and support local farmers. Dish Society works with many local farms and try their best to get products locally. I was very impressed with their menu and the organic soda machine. The Nutella French Toast with Berries and Buttermilk Chicken Biscuits with House Gravy were a hit! Lawwd, that biscuit though.... I thought my grandmother Bennie was in the kitchen whippin it up. Brad the General Manager and I sparked up a conversation about the history of Dish Society and we both realized that one of our favorite cities in the South was Asheville, North Carolina.
French Riviera Bakery & Cafe
Wait, am I in Paris eating croissants and Eclairs while sippin on a Chai Latte? Did I just cross my legs and start to speak French? That's how I felt when I visited The French Riviera Bakery and Cafe near the Galleria shopping district. You don't have to pack a bag and fly to Europe to enjoy authentic French food. French Riviera Bakery is nicely decorated with open windows everywhere and plush plants that give you a nature feel. They have an amazing selections of croissants and the Eclairs were my favorite! I highly recommend this place for a light meal or to catch up with friends over coffee or tea.
Backstreet Cafe
Backstreet Cafe is a great place for brunch with friends and the food is B-A-N-G-I-N-G! Freshness and quality is what attracted me to Backstreet Cafe. Located in Montrose, Backstreet has a dish for everyone from the Fried Shrimp Sandwhich to the Flatbread pizza, everything here will create a Foodgasm in your mouth. Another hit is the Wild Berry Mimosas: a combination of blackberries, blueberries, strawberries, and ginger beer.
Torchy's Tacos
I haven't visited Mexico yet, but when I do I'm going in on some tacos. I love Tacos. I could eat them every single day.! Torchy's Tacos is a Houston taco joint that knows what real taco should taste like. Try the Trailer Park Trashy, Baja Shrimp and the Independent. Also, the Green Chile Queso is the dish that everyone raves about when they visit Torcy's. They don't skip out on the meats and veggies and pile it on. They stick to the motto of everything being big in Texas!
When I travel I listen to suggestions from friends, read a reviews and just got off the beaten path. Not all of the food joints I visit is a winner, but when i find the best spots I have to share them to make you feel at ease when you are visiting a new city.
